Tiny Island
The proprietor of the Florida cottage created space in her kitchen for a console-turned-island.

Handcrafted Style
In the kitchen of the Connecticut home, a classic table serves as a prep island.

Budget-Friendly Option
When the goal is rustic simplicity, there's no need to spend tons on custom cabinetry and granite countertops, particularly on a kitchen island. For this kitchen remodel, while stools brightened out of Walmart paint purchased off the rack, changed oak cabinets and topped with the birch slabs of Ikea.

Color-Blocked Accents
Zippy bursts of solid colors, such as the row of candy-hued stools in the kitchen island, are lively without overwhelming the kitchen of the Minnesota lake cottage. "Using larger chunks of color versus small, complicated patterns makes a bolder state-ment that's also easier on the eye," says interior designer Michelle Fries, who helped plan the distance.
